I decided to search out dog training schools and found The United States K-9 Academy in Connecticut. I took the full Master Dog Trainer’s course and was trained by the renowned, Jack Healy, the owner. The skills I learned at the school included kennel management, obedience training, protection training, building searches and correcting behavioral problems. I also learned a great deal about breed characteristics and personality types which is how I was taught to determine the style of training I would use on each individual dog. I completed the course and it was very valuable in the development of my actual career as a dog trainer. I concentrate on obedience training and behavioral modifications for the household pet along with competing in the conformation ring at dog shows. I have prepared dogs to obtain their Obedience titles, Agility titles and Schutzund titles. However, my specialty is working with dogs as a house hold pet, especially those with severe behavioral issues. I use a combination of hand signals and voice commands. Many trainers use treats or clickers to obtain a desired response. However, since we do not all walk around with treats and since all dogs do not respond to treats, I use a specific training plan for each individual dog based on positive reinforcements that will work for each dog. I have never had a dog that did not finish the training course without showing tremendous improvement.
